“Sorry for not saying hey to y’all,” announces the humbled American twang of Bon Iver’s front-man Justin Vernon, “we got a bit excited.” Five years since emerging from a log cabin with debut album ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ the band have found themselves three songs in to a sold out set at an anxious Wembley Arena.
As receding hairlines and sweater vests infiltrate a sea of checkered shirts, baggy jumpers and dense facial hair, fans who have witnessed their best kept go to number two on the Billboard chart fear that Bon Iver could have succumb to the demon of mainstream success.
Bedraggled drapes and lighting that resembles a B&Q half price sale fittingly frame the bed-headed outline of Vernon and his eight-piece cast. Hushed silences spread around the arena as the band breath raw, passionate life into their first of only five UK tour dates this year. Opener Perth makes light work of easing across the venue’s beer worn floors and industrial black walls to transport the crowd to the band’s infinitely more secluded origins. The only hint of commercial popularity comes via a vocal transformer in Minnesota, WI, Honda hs520 repair manual. presumably the leftovers of a certain Mr.West.
Arriving off the back of their biggest US tour to date, Bon Iver’s interaction verges on telepathic. Swapping trombone for percussive chime the group work effortlessly as their singer’s unharnessed vocal weaves around their back catalogue, flicking from hauntingly delicate to rampant at will. Despite introducing a new dynamic to tracks from their self-titled sophomore album, it’s songs from their 2007 debut that incite anything remotely resembling hysteria. A bass saxophone driven ‘Blood Bank’ followed by a rare glimpse of ‘Beach Baby’ Mutilate a doll 2 game download. offer the opportunity for a sing along as Vernon’s nye on illegible, lilting growl leaves even the most persistent karaoke hopefuls redundant.
Tasteful flutters of strings and improvised percussive interludes show each member’s flare while maintaining a sense of freshness over a stretch of well worn singles. The peak of this collective showmanship sees drummer Matt McCaughan taking the baton from an effects drenched clarinet solo to lead a euphoricCreature Fear in the night’s best stadium rocker impersonation.

As the crowd catch their breath, Re:Stacks is performed over the angelic harmonies of Watford raised support act The Staves. Despite making it’s best efforts to reach row z, the track’s vulnerability is a stark reminder that even familiar tracks see Bon Iver’s signature intimacy getting lost in the venue’s preparations for Disney on Ice. Efforts to reassert whimsical charm are made by a charismatic Vernon as a new-found stage confidence is translated to include the masses in in-jokes picked up on tour. This alternative seems to patch things up slightly as a Genesis-esque group solo during closing track ‘Beth/Rest,’ that loses the attention of anyone still reeling from the £4.50 price tag of a beer, fails to dishearten those sold on the majesty of a band in their prime.

“Y’all know what’s going on,” smirks the front man as he mocks the inevitability of an encore. The outfit reemerges with a heartfelt ‘Skinny Love’ followed by a call and response laden ‘Wolves’ that echoes into the haze of North West London long after the band leave the stage.
The lack of pretense that fuels murmurs towards the all too familiar glow of Wembley Park indicates a reluctant double Grammy win and a slot on your Dad’s top 25 played list haven’t affected Bon Iver’s ‘we’re-successful-but-we-don’t-deserve-it’ attitude. Wembley Arena may be a far cry from a cabin in rural America but Vernon and Co. made a good go at forcing it into their search for a Wisconsin shaped niche in contemporary music.

Hoyas by S. Carey 1 review.Write a review for us »
I'm loving the first track on this EP from Bon Iver sideman S. Carey. He builds the track slowly using subtle electronics and whispered vocals but it all reaches a wonderful life affirming climax with lots of gorgeous cut up horns. I can't help thinking of Bed's unsurpassable 'The Wood Bunch' or the later, lauded Talk Talk. I'm therefore annoyed that on the second tune he borrows Justin Vernon's bloody autotune. It never NEVER sounds good. Actually has anyone heard Brian Wilson's autotuned vocals at the recent Beach Boys concert? A terrible idea. Let the man sing out of tune if he wants to. The third track veers off further into autotune hell but the vocals are pitched so low that it becomes a weird unworldly sound. The fourth track on this EP is back to shit autotune and as a result I'm not reviewing it. Autotune go to hell!
